2009 Fall Retreat:

Date: September 11-13, 2009
Location: Embassy Suites Indianapolis North

Keynote Speakers: Patricia & Richard Garey

Patricia Garey, is the author of two books, Beautiful Women and A Time To Grow.  Patricia is a dynamic and engaging motivational speaker focused on helping individuals achieve their full potential. Her workshops include REAL WOMEN DON’T LOOK LIKE BARBIE, FINDING YOUR WINGS, and TRUE PASSION/REAL LEADERSHIP. Patricia and her husband Richard realized a life long dream in the summer of 2003 when they purchased the Planters Barn Theater in Hannibal, Missouri. Richard Garey is director of Heritage Stage Productions, a National Heritage Foundation, which produces MARK TWAIN HIMSELF during the summer season and a variety of other dramatic productions throughout the year. They are enjoying watching their five amazing children bring wonderful spouses, adorable grandchildren and fascinating new careers into their lives.

Richard and I are looking forward to being with you at the Indiana Women’s Ministry Fall Retreat, CELEBRATING THE CREATOR.  We have worked creatively together for the past 25 years encouraging and collaborating in each other’s projects in writing, arts and theater.  We make very little distinction between the Arts with a capital ‘A’ and the everyday creative acts that give life richness and joy.  Setting the table or setting a stage; painting a picture or just the house;  writing a book or merely a love letter, we are constantly reminded that we are the children of the Creator God and He is good!  His abundance surrounds us.

Richard and I both grow up in the Seventh-day Adventist church, attended Adventist church schools and graduated from Southern Missionary College (now Southern Adventist University.)  Richard’s graduate degree is in English and mine is in Organizational Behavior.  Richard has taught in the Adventist educational system for thirty-seven years.  I have worked as a career consultant for seventeen years.

This summer will mark Richard’s seventh season performing MARK TWAIN HIMSELF in Hannibal.  In addition to TWAIN, Richard has performed A SHEPHERD’S TALE for the past five Christmas seasons.  This is one of our favorite shows.  We immerse our guests in the sights, sounds and smells of the first Christmas.  We serve a “shepherd’s supper” of middle eastern foods, burn incense of myrrh and play recordings of ancient instruments.  A family nearby brings fresh cut cedar trees to decorate the stage every year.  It looks and smells beautiful!  The story of the birth of Christ told by the shepherd is moving and almost always our guests linger after the show.  We could recount many stories of how the SHEPHERD’S TALE has touched the lives of our guests, both believers and non-believers.  And every year we shut down the show by looking at each other and saying, “WOW!  We can’t believe we get to do this!”  As with all things given to God, He returns them back to us pressed down and over flowing.
